Game on: Rhinelander's legendary Hodag is the star of new mobile game
App features local settings, white bulldogs

The city's famous mythological beast is now starring in his own brand-new mobile game, "Hungry Hodag," which is free to download for Apple and Android devices, the Rhinelander Area Chamber of Commerce announced late this week.
In the game, players guide the Hodag through different settings in and around the Rhinelander area - from a lakeside resort to the stage at Hodag Country Fest - to gobble up items in an effort to rack up the most points.
The Hodag must avoid harmful items like snowmobiles and golf clubs, and, in a nod to the Hodag's backstory (as described by the famed timber cruiser Eugene Shepard, who "discovered" the beast in 1893), can regain health by eating white bulldogs.
"The Hodag is an important part of our community here in Rhinelander, and we're thrilled to have this opportunity to introduce the Hodag to a new generation of fans," said Bill Clow, executive director of the Rhinelander Area Chamber of Commerce. "This is a fun, new way to promote Rhinelander as a travel destination and promote some of the fun things we have available in the area."
The Rhinelander Tourism Marketing Committee would also like to remind fans about the Hungry Hodag Sweepstakes, which will give one grand-prize winner a Hodag-themed getaway to Rhinelander, including a stay at America's Best Value Inn, Hodag merchandise and more.
Through March 31, players can enter by visiting explorerhinelander.com and filling out a short form (including the score they got playing Hungry Hodag) for a chance to win.
The Hungry Hodag app was created by Pilch & Barnet, a Madison-based destination marketing firm that has provided marketing services to the community since 2006.
