Hodag hockey competes at state
The Hodag bantams went 1-2 and placed fourth during their state tournament in Sheboygan while the Hodag squirts went 0-3 and finished eighth at Amery.
The Hodag bantams won their quarterfinal game against host team Sheboygan 10-1 last Saturday. Rhinelander scored four goals in each of the first two periods and tacked on two more in the third. Harlan Wojtusik had a six-point game with both a hat trick and a playmaker in the contest. Abe Laggis scored twice and assisted on five other goals. Harrison Shinners also scored a pair of goals.
Bridger Flory, Madi Losch and Conor Pequet also scored in the Sheboygan contest. Flory added three assists while goalie Seth Stafford stopped 11 of the 12 shots he faced in victory.
Rhinelander fell 4-2 in the semifinals to eventual state champion Waupun. A pair of late third-period goals by Waupun proved to be the difference. Pequet and Laggis both scored in the game while Stafford made 28 saves.
On Sunday, the Hodags fell 8-6 to Amery in the third-place game. The score was tied 5-5 following two periods, but Amery rallied for three goals in the third. Laggis recorded a hat trick in the game. Pequet, Shinners and Wojtusik also scored. Stafford made 31 saves in the loss, which included a late empty-net goal by Amery.
In the squirt 3B state tournament, the Hodags opened with a 7-0 loss to tournament host and eventual state champ Amery. Rhinelander fell 3-1 to Waupaca in the consolation semifinals and 3-2 in overtime to Stoughton in the seventh-place game.
