Martha Knudtson, center, of Rhinelander was the big winner at the 29th annual Kiwanis Winter Escapes Extravaganza March 5 at the Northwods Banquet Center. Knudtson won the $2,000 grand prize. Rod and Pat Karaba of Rhinelander won the $1,000 second prize. Pictured with Knutson are Winter Escapes coordinator Romelle Vandervest and Winter Escapes master of ceremonies Dave Havel. Because of the numerous prizes donated by local merchants and overwhelming community support, Winter Escapes raised over $20,000. All profits from the event will support projects and programs for Rhinelander area children and families. The bulk of this year's money will be used to construct a children's art classroom at ArtStart Rhinelander. Past projects funded by the Rhinelander Kiwanis Club include the playground equipment at Pioneer Park, the outdoor basketball court at Central School, the greenhouse at the Rhinelander Food Pantry, and three $1,500 annual scholarships for Rhinelander High School graduates.
