SDR particpates in 'Spread the Word to End the Word' Day
Students and staff wore Spread the Word to End the Word t-shirts, made posters, sent out resources to teachers to use in class, made a video at RHS and asked all students to take the pledge to stop using the R word.
"We need leaders in our community who are role models of unity," the School District of Rhinelander said in a press release. "That we have found with great pride in the School District of Rhinelander. Project Unify is a club at Rhinelander High School that includes students with and without disabilities. The overall goal of the club is to reach out in our schools and community and promote inclusion."
The annual day of awareness is held every first Wednesday in March and is put on by Special Olympics/Project Unify. The word hurts, even if it is not directed at a person with intellectual and developmental disabilities. For too long, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities have had to overcome the challenges society has put forth through stereotypes.
Spread the Word to End the Word is an ongoing effort by Special Olympics, Project Unify to inspire respect and acceptance through raising the consciousness of society about the "R" word and how hurtful words and disrespect can be toward people with intellectual disabilities.
Banners are on display in the lunchroom allowing students to sign to pledge to stop using the word. You may also go online and pledge at www.R-word.org.
