Artstart's newest exhibit features icon of community's past
The Historic Lassig Dairy: A Wisconsin Story will open Thursday, June 30, and be available for viewing through Saturday, July 30, in the ArtStart Gallery.
"For decades the Lassig Dairy was a household name in Rhinelander, founded in 1888 by early Rhinelander pioneer Julius Lassig," ArtStart officials said in a press release annoncing the new exhibit. "In the 1900s the Lassig farm produced a variety of vegetables and included a three-acre strawberry patch. The Lassig family ran a produce, milk and butter route. In 1918, ownership of the farm passed to Ted and Hazel Lassig who developed the business through Wisconsin's Golden Age of Dairy. Lassig Dairy produced many milk products such as half-and-half, skim and chocolate milk, ice cream, cottage cheese, and bottled beverages such as orange juice. Between 1940 and 1960 many products were delivered door-to-door in glass bottles. Lassig Dairy discontinued operations in 1964, and ownership of the farm passed to the Deede Family in 2010. Bob Deede has faithfully preserved and maintained the property since taking ownership."
The exhibit, organized by Kerry Bloedom, honors the memory of the Lassig family and the dairy business through historic photographs, artifacts, descriptions, and modern art prints. Bloedom will speak at a special presentation describing the exhibit at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 24.
Ice cream sundaes will be served, and the public is welcome at no charge.
