Callaghan competes at National History Day Competition
NPHS student portrayed Nellie Bly
Students competed in one of the following five categories: Documentaries, Exhibits, Paper, Performance, or Website. Callaghan focused her NHD project on the accomplishments of journalist Nellie Bly.
"Her category, performance, provides a dramatic portrayal of Nellie Bly's significance in history and is an original production," the Northland Pines School District said in a press release. "The performance has been scripted based on her research of Ms. Bly and also incorporates a dramatic appeal to the audience and judges. Annalise undertook an extensive process plan to achieve her well-earned scores, which allowed her to advance to the NHD National competition. First, she researched extensively the key facts about Nellie Bly and used them to develop a thesis relevant to the 2016 theme. She then created a script which she memorized and practiced referencing the historical evidence she found in her research. The entire script for Annalise's performance has centered around a thesis statement, and then incorporated supporting statements, and a conclusion that she developed from her research."
Research was only the first phase in the NHD process.
"Once Annalise finished her research and prepared a script she was only partially finished," the release states. "Annalise prepared a stage set to depict Bly's accomplishments. Building, transporting, and setting up this on her own has been no easy feat. During competition Annalise also had to dress the part, and even look like the accomplished Nellie Bly in appearance. To do this well she spent, countless hours of research, preparation, and practice. Over one million students participate in National History Day, and for a local student to be able to compete at the national competition in Washington is a truly impressive accomplishment. This performance is truly masterfully done and may be one of the best performances ever to be created by a student from the Northwoods. This truly was an opportunity of a lifetime. Annalise received a callback after her performance on Tuesday and was in the top 10 performances for not only the nation, but internationally she competed against Korea, China, Guam, and South Asia. There were approximately 100 competitors in the performance category. In addition, she received the 'Outstanding Entry Award,' this award is given to one senior and one junior entry for the state of Wisconsin. She was called up, given a medal, and on national television."
