Rhinelander ran its record to 7-0 with a late-inning explosion to defeat the Yankees 11-1 six innings at Stafford Field.
The game was much closer through five innings than the final score indicated as the Grays chased the Tomahawk starter from the hill in the sixth and rallied for eight runs in the inning to end the contest via the 10-run rule.
Liam Stevens pitched a gem of a two-hitter for Rhinelander. He allowed an unearned run in the first inning, but shut down Tomahawk (5-2) after that, walking no one and striking out seven.
Stevens helped his own cause by going 1-for-2 at the plate with a pair of RBIs. The first was an opening-inning groundout to score Connor Cooper.
After that, both teams hung zeroes on the scoreboard until the bottom of the fifth when the Grays rallied for two with the bottom of the order. Teagan Guckenberg led off with a single and Connor Lund followed with a well-placed bunt up the third-base line for a hit. A wild pitch scored Guckenberg and Lund crossed on a Seth Stafford grounder.
The floodgates flew open in the sixth as a pair of walks, followed by an error on a sacrifice bunt by Stevens, plated two runs. Jake Wilmot tripled to score Stevens and crossed himself on a single by Jacob Dreifuerst, who went 2-for-2 in the contest. Lund singled home Asher Johnson, Guckenberg walked and scored on a wild pitch for the second straight inning and a two-base error allowed the final two runs to cross.
The night prior, Rhinelander Gray overcame some sloppy defense to rally past Crandon 15-11 at Stafford Field. Rhinelander committed nine errors in the game and trailed 10-7 after the Cardinal put up five runs in the fourth, but the Grays rallied for eight unanswered runs - three in the fifth, two in the sixth and three in the top of the seventh - to regain control.
Wilmot, David Schramke and Nate Cogar all collected two hits in the contest. Danny Zuiker, Stevens, Seth Stafford, Johnson, Cooper and Alex Kubeny also contributed to Rhinelander's 12-hit total.
Cooper pitched four innings in relief to earn the win. He allowed only two hits and struck out four batters.
Senior League: Laser Pros fall in extras
Laser Pros couldn't cash in on opportunities the nightcap of Wednesday's Senior League doubleheader at Stafford Field, falling to Lakeland 12-10 in nine innings.
Laser Pros had the go-ahead or game-winning run on board in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings, but were never able to convert.
Lakeland took the lead for good in the ninth inning on a two-out dropped fly ball and tacked on an insurance run on a wild pitch.
Laser Pros collected 14 hits in the game, including three each by Abe Laggis and Bryce Schickert. Martin Hoger and Tim Remitz each had two hits in the game. Max Spaulding, Kamerin Resch, Logan Oestreich and Eddie Bauer also singled in the contest.
Hoger pitched six innings of relief in the loss. All five runs he allowed were unearned, part of a 10-error night for Laser Pros. He allowed three hits, struck out seven and walked two.
Resch started and lasted only a third of an inning before being relieved by Schickert, who got Laser Pros through the third before reaching his pitching limit for the week.
Laser Pros bounced back Thursday with a 5-0 win over Merrill Blue and currently sits 4-4 in the Senior League standings.
