Positive behavior nets RHS freshman a car courtesy of giveaway program
This year, Makayla Koser was the only student out of 10 finalists with the key that not only unlocked the 2006 Chevy HHR donated by Rhinelander GM, but also started it.
The vehicle was the "grand prize" at an assembly held Wednesday at Mike Webster Stadium. The HHR was refurbished by RHS students through generous donations from various Rhinelander businesses.
Koser received a "green card" from one of her teachers in recognition of positive behaviors throughout the year. The cards were entered into a drawing held at the stadium. The students whose cards were drawn selected a rubber duck from a wading pool. Each duck had a number on the bottom that resulted in the student winning either a gift basket made up of donated items from local businesses or one of 10 car keys.
Koser was the sixth of the 10 students to try her key in the door. She didn't realize at first when the key turned in the lock that she was the winner.
"You just won a car," Steve Geiger, PBIS team member and event emcee, said.
After using her key to start it, Koser sat stunned as the RHS student body in the bleachers cheered.
She said she has never won anything like a vehicle before. Still, she said she would probably sell the prize.
"I already have a car," she said.
Geiger said the focus of the PBIS program is to encourage a school environment of respect and rapport, and to reinforce the positive behaviors demonstrated by students. He said the donated prizes from area businesses helped make the program a success.
"We really couldn't have done it without all their help," he said.
In addition to Rhinelander GM, East Side Automotive, Rhinelander Detail Pros, Sounds and Motion, Domino's and Northstar Steel Fabrication also made donations that made the car giveaway possible. Additional businesses donated other prizes that were given away by drawing.
