The Crescent Elementary School kindergarten class explored Rhinelander businesses Friday as part of field trip funded by a grant from the Hodag Schools Foundation.

Four separate kindergarten classes, taught by Sue Bart, Stephanie Smith, Amanda Olson and Julie Gerth, participated in the field trip.

The children were filled with wonder as they learned about the pneumatic tubes at CoVantage Credit Union, sang, danced and interacted with residents of Grace Lodge, and explored the departments at Trig's. They were amazed by the architecture of the Oneida County Courthouse and enjoyed a lovely picnic with the Rhinelander Fire Department and National Guard, before wrapped up their day at the Rhinelander Area Chamber of Commerce where they saw the big Hodag up close.

At some of the stops, the children received gifts.

At Trig's they were handed bottled water, fruit, meat sticks and more.

"Trig's always donates an amazing number of food items from all the food groups and all the departments in the store," said Julie Gerth, Crescent Elementary School kindergarten teacher.

CoVantage Credit Union gave the children a cookie party as well as a pencil and pen in pencil pockets.

Brayden Alsteen liked visiting the bank and learning about the history of the courthouse.

"This building (the courthouse) was made a long time ago," he said.

Jaxyn Fawley enjoyed going to Trig's and receiving the goodies.

He said he couldn't wait to go home and tell his parents about the bank and Trig's.

Maliya Tosi was captivated by the courthouse's beauty.

"It's pretty inside," she said.

She learned that the tholos doesn't go in the dome.

"The inside thing doesn't hold the long pointy thing," she said.

The tour allowed the students to study job opportunities, explore businesses and practice their social skills, the teachers said.

"This is obviously important, some of these places the kids don't visit, they don't realize they exist, and it's just a real eye-opener for them to think about as far as places to do business when they get older in Rhinelander and perhaps job and hobby ideas," Gerth said.

The sponsors of this year's field trip included the School District of Rhinelander, HSF Group and Partners in Education.
