Serving it '50s Style: Church youth raise $1300 during annual car hop
By Cory Dellenbach-
The event, which raises money for the youth of the church to be used in a way that they choose, was in its 14th year. The youth served over 100 people at the event this year, raising $1,358.35.
"They have gotten used to the tradition here since this is our 14th year. They really enjoy it," said Pastor Tammy Barthels. "They like that the kids are involved with something at the church. The customers are excited to have the kids come and wait on them."
Menu items included hamburgers, cheeseburgers, brats, hot dogs, French fries, shakes, malts and root beer floats.
"It's one of the events I look forward to every year," said Henry Reilly, of Rhinelander, who has attended the last three car hops. "I retired here a few years ago and went to this one year and have loved it ever since. The kids do a great job with it and it brings back a lot of memories for us older folks."
As usual, the lunch-hour rush hit about 11:30 a.m. and kept the kids moving around the parking lot as fast as the cars were being parked.
"It's neat that we can just pull up, roll down our window, give them our order and then they put the tray right on the window," said Barbara Reilly. "It's just like the old days. And the kids dress up very nice too. There's one young man here with the red, polka-dot tie. My husband had a tie like that when he was younger."
Next the youth will decide how to use their funds that they earned.
"It helps them be able to go to camp, registration for their bike trip," Barthels said. "Last year they donated towards the Rhinelander Food Pantry and World Hunger."
