The Grays broke a 3-3 deadlock with a three-run sixth inning, and worked out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh to defeat the Cardinals 6-3 Friday night at Stafford Field.
Connor Cooper drew a one-out walk to begin the Rhinelander rally in the sixth. Liam Stevens followed with a double and singles by Nate Cogar and Jake Wilmot gave the Grays a 6-3 lead.
A single, walk and an error loaded the bases for Crandon with one out in the bottom of the seventh and the Grays turned to No. 1 pitcher Stevens to earn the save, which he got with a strikeout and a fly to shallow center.
Rhinelander cashed in on a wild pitch and an error to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but Crandon responded with an error-aided run in the bottom of the inning and took a 3-2 lead in the third thanks to a couple of hits and a sacrifice fly. Rhinelander tied the game in the fourth as Stevens led off with a double and scored on a single by Wilmot.
Rhinelander collected eight hits in the contest, including two each from Danny Zuiker, Stevens and Wilmot. Cogar and Jacob Dreifuerst had the other hits.
Cogar worked 6 1/3 innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts. The Gray team took on Lakeland Monday in Tomahawk in the Senior League semifinals in a game that concluded after deadline.
Rhinelander White, Laser Pros also advance
Rhinelander Gray wasn't the only one seed that had to fend off an upset bid by Crandon. Rhinelander White outslugged Crandon 18-12 in a Prep League quarterfinal earlier Friday at Stafford Field. Details of that game were not provided prior to deadline.
In all three of Rhinelander's four Babe Ruth teams advanced into the semifinals. Laser Pros got by Eagle River 10-3 Thursday night in Eagle River in the Senior League. Rhinelander Black fell to Lakeland Silver 12-2 Friday in a Prep League quarterfinal.
Laser Pros faced Merrill Blue Monday in Tomahawk in the Senior League semis. Merrill Blue reached the semis by upsetting second-seeded Tomahawk 15-14 on Thursday. Rhinelander White played Lakeland Black in a Prep League semifinal Monday night in Minocqua.
The tournament championship games will be held Tuesday at Stafford Field with the Prep League title at 5 p.m. and the Senior League game to follow.
