Rebels power past Chequamegon
Rain quashes Eagle River doubleheader again
The outfielder went 4-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs Wednesday, and the Rebels pounded out 16 hits in all in a 7-3 victory over Chequamegon at Stafford Field.
Quade hit a two-run shot to right field to break a 2-2 deadlock in the fifth and drove in a pair of runs by legging out two infield hits in the contest.
"Brad, he seems to come through in the clutch," Rebels manager Dan Huhnstock said. "He's a very good clutch hitter, hustles. He had a couple hustle singles tonight and one pretty wind-aided home run. That was a good piece of hitting. He barreled up the ball real good and good things happen when you hit it hard."
Rhinelander immediately jumped on Eagles' pitcher Dawson Weik, ringing up four hits in the opening inning. Brad Comer drove in Easton Senoraske and Quade beat out a ground ball between first and second with two outs to plate Kurt Zuiker and give the Rebels a 2-0 lead.
Four more hits for the Rebels over the next two innings yielded no runs and Huhnstock admitted the team became a little frustrated by the lack of scoring.
"We left too many runners on base. I thought we should have given ourselves some more breathing room earlier," he said.
Rhinelander stranded 11 runners on base in the win, including six in scoring position.
Chequamegon pulled even by the top of the fourth. Ryan Giannoni hit a two-out single to plate courtesy runner Trace Brayton in the third. The Eagles drew three walks off Rhinelander starter Brandon Hess in the fourth and Darek Pertozalek tied the game, hitting a one-out grounder that scored Austin Edwards.
Quade's fifth-inning, opposite-field homer was part of a two-out rally in which six consecutive Rebels reached base. Nick Spencer walked and scored on a Josh Randolph single past third to put Rhinelander ahead 5-2.
Chequamegon got a run back in the sixth as Taylor Brayton scored from second after Senoraske misplayed a potential double play ball, but the Rebels limited the damage by converting another double play chance. Dayne Marlenge flew out to Jacob DeMeyer in left and the junior-to-be gunned down Cam Pearson, who tried to score from third on the play.
"Anytime you gun a runner at home for the third out of an inning, it's a huge momentum boost," Huhnstock said.
Quade and DeMeyer came through with RBI hits in the sixth, giving Rhinelander some additional breathing room.
Hess picked up the win for the Rebels, allowing two runs on four hits over five innings. Nick Spencer worked the final two innings to record the save.
"I was real happy with Brandon's outing tonight," Huhnstock noted. "I wanted him to have an extended outing, getting five or six innings in. Then Nick finished it off very nicely."
Comer, Tyler Blomdahl and DeMeyer all had two-hit nights to go along with Quade's big offensive performance. In all 10 different Rebels collected hits in the contest.
"We definitely put the ball in play," Huhnstock said. I'm a little surprised we left a bunch of runners on base. I thought we could have put up some more runs. We had opportunities."
Eagle River doubleheader rained out again
Fifteen minutes before first pitch Thursday, it appeared Rhinelander and Eagle River's oft-rescheduled doubleheader would finally go off without a hitch.
Then Mother Nature interfered, again.
A storm system developed right over Stafford Field and, after a half hour of steady rainfall soaked the playing surface, the Hodags and Eagles were forced to postpone their doubleheader again.
Rain washed out a scheduled game at Eagle River between the two teams June 15. It was rescheduled for a doubleheader July 7 at Stafford Field but, rain roughly one hour before first pitch forced the teams to try again Thursday.
The teams will get one more chance to play the doubleheader before regional play begins, as they will attempt to make up the twinbill at 5 p.m. Monday at Stafford Field. The National Weather Service is calling for mostly sunny conditions that afternoon, with a high in the upper 70s.
The Rebels traveled to Mosinee Friday in a game that concluded after deadline. Rhinelander will take on Antigo Wednesday in the first round of AA regional play in Merrill.
