American jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second as starting pitcher Max Ratty walked four batters. All four came around to score thanks to a walk, an error and a wild pitch.
Wausau tacked on a run in the third, two more in the fourth and one in the fifth.
The Hodags, meanwhile, combined to strike out 11 times against American pitching. Lucas Hager fanned nine over five-plus innings to earn the win. Grant Warren came on after Hager hit the 75-pitch limit and struck out two.
Will Gretzinger had the only hits for Rhinelander in the contest - a pair of doubles off Hager in the third and the sixth. Rhinelander's lone run came across in the third as Josh Cogar walked, stole a base and scored from second on a sacrifice bunt by Leo Losch.
Cogar reached bases twice in the contest, drawing a pair of walks. Ratty, James Heck and Brady Frisque also got aboard via bases on balls.
Ratty pitched three innings in the loss. Gretzinger and Heck also threw in the contest for Rhinelander.
The loss dropped Rhinelander into the loser's bracket of the double-elimination tournament. The Hodags will take on Merrill at 7 p.m. Monday at Doepke Park in Rothschild.
12U's still alive
The Rhinelander Little League 12U All-Star team has made it into the top three of the District 2 tournament. After beating Merrill via the mercy rule Monday night, the Hodags delivered some final-inning heroics to knock off Antigo 7-6 Tuesday at Doepke Park.
Devyn Orth hit a bases-loaded single to score Jake Losch and Isaac Bixby as the Hodags rallied from behind to beat Antigo by a run. Losch, Bixby and Tim Fox had all bunted their way aboard earlier in the sixth.
It capped off a 3-for-4 night for Orth and a big offensive performance for Rhinelander. Bixby, Fox, Joe Schneider, Jacob Schoope and Losch all collected two hits in the contest. Mason Tuckwab hit his first career home run, a game-tying shot in the fourth.
The Hodag bats came alive in a big way Monday as they defeated Merrill 14-4 in an elimination game.
Rhinelander raced to a 7-0 lead after two innings after a home run by Sam Schneider kickstarted a big second. Schneider finished 3-for-4 in the contest. Fox went 2-for-2 and Jacksen Smith went 1-for-2 with a double and three RBIs. The Hodags collected 14 hits as a team.
Fox and Schoppe shared the pitching duties in Monday's win.
Rhinelander was scheduled to face Wausau American Wednesday night in a game that concluded after deadline. The winner was set to face Wausau National Thursday, needing to beat the Nationals both Thursday and Friday to win the district title.
