Rhinelander's two entries in the Northwoods Babe Ruth Senior League finished the regular season on a high note this week.

Laser Pros International completed an 8-4 regular season with a 16-6 win over Eagle River Tuesday at Stafford Field and a 16-8 triumph over Lakeland Wednesday in Minocqua. Rhinelander Gray defeated Merrill Red 12-6 Tuesday in Merrill to finish the regular season 11-1.

The first meeting between Lakeland and Laser Pros went to extra innings and the rematch was no exception, with Laser Pros scoring eight times in the ninth to finally put the game out of reach.

The first nine batters of the inning all reached safely for Laser Pros. Eric Grulke started the big rally with a single and scored on Bryce Schickert's double. Tim Remitz's single scored Schickert and Laser Pros used a rash of Lakeland errors to score more runs. In all, Laser Pros sent 12 batters to the plate in the ninth.

Laser Pros led 7-5 after five innings, but Lakeland rallied for single runs in the sixth and seventh to force extra innings. Josh Randolph doubled home Kamerin Resch in the top of eighth to give Laser Pros the lead, but Lakeland answered with a single run in the bottom of the frame. Schickert worked out of a bases loaded jam with back-to-back strikeouts to push the game to the ninth.

Laser Pros collected 11 hits on the night, led by a 3-for-5 performance by Abe Laggis. Max Spaulding went 2-for-4 and all nine players in the team's lineup either recorded a hit, scored a run or collected an RBI.

Schickert struck out four over the final two innings to get the win. Martin Hoger started and pitched two innings, allowing four runs on three hits. Grulke worked innings 3-7, allowing four runs on eight hits.

Details regarding Laser Pros' game against Eagle River were not provided prior to deadline.

On Tuesday, Rhinelander Gray used an eight-run fifth inning to seize control and held off a late Merrill Red rally to double up the Bluejays at the MARC.

The Grays collected eight hits on the night and were the benefactor of five Merrill errors.

Jacob Dreifuerst and Teagan Guckenberg each went 2-for-3 in the win. Danny Zuiker, Liam Stevens, Alex Kubeny and Asher Johnson had the other hits.

Conner Cooper went 5 2/3 innings on the bump to collect the win. He allowed six runs on seven hits and struck out one. Liam Stevens pitched the final 1 1/3 innings, allowing one hit.

As the top team in the Senior League standings, Rhinelander Gray will take part in the regular season championship game at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Stafford Field. Laser Pros just missed out joining its Rhinelander counterpart, finishing a game behind Tomahawk for the runner-up spot. The Yankees swept a doubleheader from Crandon Wednesday to finish 9-3 and earn the final berth into the championship game.

Prep League: Rhinelander White clinches spot in title game

Rhinelander White clinched its spot in the Prep League regular season championship with a 9-4 win over Merrill Blue Tuesday at Stafford Field. On Thursday, the White team concluded its regular season with a 7-5 win and a 1-1 tie in a doubleheader at Tomahawk. Details were not provided prior to deadline. Rhinelander White finished the season at 11-2-1.

Rhinelander Black (5-8) defeated Tomahawk 10-2 Wednesday and was set to close the regular season Friday against Lakeland Black at Stafford Field.

The Prep League regular season championship will start at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Stafford Field. Rhinelander White's opponent in the title game has not yet been determined.
