12U All-Stars advance to second week of district tourney
The Hodags could not overcome an early deficit as they fell 4-2 to Wausau National Tuesday at Mel Mode Field, but Rhinelander rebounded with a 4-1 win over the Eagle River-based Northwoods All-Stars Wednesday in an elimination game.
The Nationals got to Rhinelander starter Joe Schneider early Tuesday. Cole Osness hit a two-run home run off him in the top of the first and David Ackerman followed with an RBI double to spot Wausau a quick 3-0 lead.
Isaac Bixby came on to pitch for Rhinelander and allowed one run the rest of the way - a solo home run by Isaiah Piscitello to lead off the third.
The Hodags made a rally in the fourth, collecting three of their six hits in the contest. Devyn Orth led off with a double and Joe Schneider collected an infield hit. Jacksen Smith walked after Schneider was thrown out trying to steal second and Sam Schneider hit a two-run, two-out single to right.
Joe Schneider got aboard with a double with one out in the sixth to bring the potential tying run to the plate, but back-to-back groundouts ended the contest.
Orth and Joe Schneider each collected two hits in the loss. Isaac Bixby and Sam Schneider had the other hits for the Hodags. Joe Schneider struck out two in his two-thirds of an inning of work. One of those strikeout victims reached base on a passed ball and eventually scored. Bixby allowed three hits over the final 5 1/3 innings, striking out six and walking one.
Two-run frames in the second and fifth Wednesday were enough to push the Hodags by Northwoods in the second game of the tournament.
Northwoods took a brief 1-0 lead following back-to-back doubles to lead off the second, but Rhinelander answered in the bottom of the inning with a two-run single by Cole Lehman that plated Joe Schneider and Jacob Schoppe. Rhinelander tacked on some insurance in the fifth as Bixby singled and scored after Northwoods misplayed Tim Fox's single to left. Fox ended up at third on the play and scored after Orth reached on an error.
Smith went the distance on the hill for Rhinelander. He struck out the side in the first and finished with 10 strikeouts in the contest. He allowed only three hits and did not walk a batter.
The Hodags had seven hits in the contest. Joe Schneider had his second two-hit game in as many days. Bixby, Fox, Orth, Lehman and Jake Losch had the other hits.
Rhinelander will play in an elimination game against either Merrill or Wausau American at 7 p.m. Monday at Doepke Park in Rothschild.
The Rhinelander 10U All-Star team will begin tournament play Monday, hosting Wausau American in a 6 p.m. first pitch at Mel Mode Field. The winner of that game will face Northwoods at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Rhinelander.
