The White team jumped out to a 6-0 lead. The Black squad plated single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, but was unable to complete the rally.
Harlan Wojtusik's RBI grounder in the first got the scoring started for the White team. Conor Pequet singled and scored on a wild pitch in the second and Zach Anderson drove in Isaiah Piosalan on a grounder. Wojtusik hit another RBI grounder in the third, Chase Redmond scored on a passed ball in the fourth and Ben Sinclair grounded home Wojtusik in the fifth.
The Black team, the host for Thursday's game, started to rally in the bottom of the fifth. Travis Towne scored on a wild pitch that inning.
Nick Schiek crossed on a wild pitch in the sixth and Walker Hartman plated Lucas McCann with a grounder in the seventh.
The game went off without a hitch, despite ominous-looking clouds that brought with them gusty winds and a brief rain shower during the middle innings.
Quinn Lamers earned the win for Rhinelander White, striking out seven and allowing three hits over four scoreless innings. Jesse Mahner worked the final three innings to earn the save.
Hartman took the loss for Rhinelander Black, pitching 3 1/3 innings. He allowed five runs on three hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Jason Huesby pitched the rest of the way, allowing a run on four hits.
Sinclair led the Rhinelander White offense, going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Lamers, Wojtusik, Pequet, Piosalan and Redmond also collected hits.
Rhinelander Black's five hits were spread among five players. Drake Martin had a double. Payton Johnson, Jordan Kuczmarski, Hartman and Huesby also recorded hits.
The win gave Rhinelander White (9-2) a one-game lead over Merrill Gray and Merrill Blue in the Prep League standings with three games to play. Rhinelander Black fell to 4-8 with the loss.
Senior League: Rhinelander Gray rolls
Eagle River had no answer for Rhinelander Gray's offense as the Northwoods Babe Ruth Senior League leaders took the nightcap of Thursday's doubleheader 13-2 in five innings at Stafford Field.
The Eagles jumped on the Hodags for two runs in the top of first, but it was all Rhinelander Gray after that. Rhinelander responded with five runs in the bottom of the first, tacked on three in the second, two in the third and three in the fourth. Eagle River was blanked following the first as the game ended via the 10-run rule.
Nate Cogar got the win for Rhinelander Gray, scattering three hits over five innings. He allowed two runs with six walks and six strikeouts. Cogar added a 2-for-3 day at the plate, one of three Rhinelander players to collect multiple hits. Jacob Dreifuerst went 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles. Connor Cooper was 2-for-3. Liam Stevens and Jake Wilmot had the other hits.
The win ran Rhinelander Gray's record to 10-1 in the Senior League. They close out the regular season Tuesday at Merrill Red.
