Laser Pros International got off to a hot start Wednesday night and knocked off its intra-city rival.

Laser Pros plated four in the first inning and held on to defeat Rhinelander Gray 4-1 in a Northwoods Babe Ruth Senior League game at Stafford Field. The loss was Rhinelander Gray's first in the league this season.

Laser Pros came out swinging, collecting four hits and an error before the game's first out. Josh Randolph and Martin Hoger each doubled as Laser Pros jumped out to a 4-0 lead.

Rhinelander Gray got a run back in the bottom of the inning as Jacob Dreifreust drew a bases loaded walk to force in Connor Cooper but, from there, the game settled into a pitchers' duel.

Southpaw Bryce Schickert earned the win for Laser Pros, scattering six hits over seven innings. He struck out one and walked three.

Liam Stevens took the tough luck loss for Rhinelander Gray. Following a shaky start, he sat down 19 of the final 21 batters. He faced the minimum from the second inning on, and struck out nine during the contest.

Rhinelander Gray missed a number of scoring opportunities in the game, stranding 10 runners on base. They left the bases loaded in the first and had runners in scoring position in the third, fifth, sixth and seventh, only to come away empty.

Laser Pros collected five hits in the game - Abe Laggis, Schickert and Brad Orth had singles to go along with Randolph and Hoger's doubles. Jake Wilmot had a 2-for-3 night for Rhinelander Gray. The team's other hits came from Seth Stafford, Danny Zuiker, Stevens and Asher Johnson.

Laser Pros has won three straight games to get to 6-4 in league play. Prior to Wednesday night's win, the team defeated Merrill Blue twice in a home-and-home series, 5-0 June 23 in Merrill and 8-3 Tuesday at Stafford Field.

Laser Pros hosts Eagle River Tuesday and travels to Lakeland Wednesday to close out the regular season.

Rhinelander Gray (9-1) had already clinched the league's best record prior to Wednesday's game. They defeated Lakeland 22-12 last Friday and edged Eagle River 6-5 Tuesday.

Rhinelander put up 16 runs in the second inning during last Friday's rout of the T-Birds. Stevens led the way, going 3-for-4 and finishing a home run short of the cycle. David Schramke added a pair of hits. Jake Wilmot, Zuiker and Nate Cogar also had hits.

Zuiker started and pitched three innings in the win, striking out five. Cooper worked the final two innings.

On Tuesday, the Grays used a three-run fifth inning to rally past Eagle River.

Cooper went the distance, allowing five runs on nine hits over seven innings with 10 strikeouts.

Zuiker was 3-for-3 at the plate. Wilmot and Stevens each went 2-for-3. Cooper, Cogar, Johnson and Connor Lund collected the other hits.

Prep League: Rhinelander teams fall in close games

Rhinelander White's lead in the Northwoods Babe Ruth Prep League was cut to a half game Wednesday with a 4-2 loss to Lakeland Black at the 70 West Complex in Minocqua.

After taking a 1-0 lead in the second, the White team surrendered single runs in each inning from the third to the sixth. Conor Pequet scored for Rhinelander in the seventh, but the comeback bid fell short. The White team collected eight hits in the loss. Jesse Mahner and Quinn Lamers split the pitching duties.

Rhinelander Black sat at 4-7 in the Prep League following a 7-6 loss to Merrill Tuesday at Stafford Field. The Black team led 5-3 after five innings, but Merrill Blue scored twice in both the sixth and the seventh to rally. Rhinelander got one run back in the bottom of the seventh, but left the tying and winning runs stranded.

Rhinelander White defeated Rhinelander Black 6-3 Thursday at Stafford Field. Look for more details in Tuesday's River News.

Rhinelander White will host Merrill Blue next Tuesday and finish the regular season with a doubleheader at Tomahawk next Thursday. Rhinelander Black travels to Tomahawk next Wednesday and closes the regular season against Lakeland Black next Friday at Stafford Field.
