Eleven skiers competed for the Rhinelander middle school Nordic ski program in last weekend's Telemark Chase in Cable.

The skiers competed in a 3.3-kilometer classic race Saturday, Jan. 23 and had to navigate the same course during a freestyle race the following day.

Kyle Morien was the fastest skier for the Hodags in Saturday's U14 boys' race, placing 22nd with a time of 17 minutes, 41.4 seconds. All five of Rhinelander's participants in the class crossed the line within roughly 90 seconds of each other. Carleen Morien led the Hodags' U14 girls' contingent, taking 23rd in class with a time of 20:36.0. McKenna Nash placed ninth in the U12 girls class (28:46.7).

Zach Goodrich paced the Rhinelander boys during Sunday's freestyle race, placing 24th in class (15:37.8). Gracie Kern, competing in the U12 division, posted the fastest time for the Rhinelander girls, taking third in class with a time of 18:07.3. Morien led the U14 girls contingent with a 18:30.4.

"Those kids are going to be fast if they continue to ski and come up through the high school ranks," Rhinelander High School Nordic ski coach Charil Reis noted. "It's going to be pretty exciting to watch."

Conference meet

The Hodags had a very strong contingent of middle school skiers Tuesday at the Central Conference race at Greenwood Hills Country Club in Wausau.

"I had 20 middle school skiers," coach Jim Wood noted. "It was an impressive showing of green Hodags down there."

Rhinelander fared well in the competition, placing third in both the boys' and girls' team divisions.

Jacques Tulowitzky and Goodrich made the medal stand in the boys' division, placing fifth and sixth, respectively. Tulowitzky completed the 3-kilometer skate course in a time of 8:41.38. Goodrich clocked in at 8:56.93. Rhinelander had five skiers finish in the top half of the 24-competitor field. Breckin Younker was ninth (9:15.42), Kyle Morien took 10th (9:37.10) and Asher Johnson was 12th (9:40.92).

Leading the way for the Hodag girls' team were Carleene Morien (eighth, 9:48.14), Anna Wood (10th, 9:57.97) and Kern (14th, 10:58.92).

"The middle school kids race hard. They actually won some awards today. It's the first time we won awards," coach Wood said. "Our skiers really pushed it today and did a great job, the best job of the season so far."
