Oneida County 4-H offering Skynet astronomy program to area youth
"Designed for youth in grades 6 and up, the program will run once a month until the end of the school year," according to a 4-H press release. "Skynet Junior Scholars is an interactive web-based astronomy program where youth are able to connect with research telescopes around the world to take pictures of celestial objects. Facilitated by a trained volunteer, participants are awarded telescope time and are instructed on how to program in exposure time, filter colors, and use afterglow and astro-imaging software that enables them to take the pictures they receive back from the research stations and make colorized images as well as investigate such things as distance and light magnitude. The opportunity also exists for youth to create radio images as well as connect with astronomers on a designated forum."
Skynet Junior Scholars is sponsored by the National Science Foundation. There is no cost for this program, but youth do need to enroll on the 4honline.com website. Lynn Feldman, UW-Extension 4-H Youth Development educator for Oneida County will be the Skynet facilitator and is available to answer questions at (715) 365-2750.
