Church youth raise money for world hunger relief
Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran's annual bike ride raised over $7,100 for world hunger relief and area food pantry
By Cory Dellenbach-
Unlike previous years where the bike ride lasted several days and included overnight stays, this past August a group of youth from the Rhinelander church traveled from Rhinelander to Minocqua and back along the Bearskin Trail.
It was a change that was made because of scheduling conflicts, but the kids didn't let that stop them.
"They were determined to do this ride and they put it together and it worked out well," said Tammy Barthels, pastor at Immanuel.
On Jan. 17, the youth presented their checks from that bike ride to the parties receiving it. Youth presented a check for $2,366.80 to Joanne O'Brien for the Rhinelander Area Food Pantry. O'Brien is a volunteer with the food pantry.
"In the past all the monies raised went to world hunger relief, but this year the kids decided they wanted a portion of that to stay in the community," Barthels said. "It's great seeing them wanting to help the local people."
The youth then presented a check for $4,805.27 to Don Schuett, a representative of the Northern Great Lakes Synod committee for world hunger relief.
"The theme for the ELCA this year is world hunger and what Immanuel and these kids did here will help kick start that," Schuett said in accepting the check on behalf of the Northern Great Lakes Synod.
The church is already planning for its bike ride this year and will hold an informational meeting following the 10:30 a.m. service (about 11:30 a.m.) on Jan. 31 in the gathering room of the church at 21 W. Timber Drive.
