The Rhinelander Swim Club won its Freezin Season Invite Saturday, Jan. 9 at the Heck Family Community Pool.

This is the second straight year the club has won its home invitational. Also, for the second year in a row, the club swept the meet's main event - the 450-yard crescendo relay.

Michael Schiek, Samson Shinners, Charlie Heck, Jacob Schoppe, David King and Joseph Heck took home trophies for winning the boys' crescendo with a time of 5 minutes, 6.26 seconds. Vivian Lamers, Ellyse Younker, Abi Winnicki, Lisa Kennedy, Makenna Winnicki and Taylor Macak won the girls' crescendo with a time of 5:06.03.

Times keep dropping as the season starts to wind down. Ten-year-old Eli Lundt had the biggest time drop of the day, shaving 33.26 seconds from his 100-yard individual medley for a new personal best of 1:59.76. Lamers, 7, dropped 30.02 seconds in the same event (2:05.66). Sierra Woodford, 11, dropped 22.17 seconds in the 50 fly bringing her personal-best time to 44.57.

Joseph Heck, 13, and Shinners, 8, had three individual first-place finishes along with their relay victories. Heck won the 100 IM (1:10.10), the 50 butterfly (31.89) and the 50 breaststroke (35.17). Shinners took the 25 free (19.90), 25 butterfly (25.18) and 25 backstroke (25.35).

Five swimmers won two races on the day. Charlie Heck, 10, took the 50 free (31.17) and 50 fly (43.15); Grace Heck, 15, won the 200 IM (2:35.53) and 100 Free (1:00.03); Jacob Schoppe, 12, claimed the 50 free (28.84) and 50 Back (37.20); Abi Winnicki, 9, won the 50 fly (36.55) and 50 back (37.89) and Ellyse Younker, 8, took the 25 fly (22.99) and 25 back (23.19).

Other Hodags to win at least won race were James Heck (100 free, 1:14.83), Lisa Kennedy, (50 back, 35.54), Michael Schiek (25 breast, 23.84) and Sam Schoppe (50, back).

In addition to those mentioned above, several other Rhinelander swimmers cracked the top three in at least one individual event, including: Jack Antonuk, Ella Heck, Thaddeus Heck, David King, Zachariah King, Vivian Lamers, Houston Mathwig, Madelyn Mathwig, Marissa McGuire, Madison Michel, Maddie Quinn, Ian Rumney, Ella Schiek, Olin Slette, Kadyn Taylor and Makenna Winnicki.

Unlike regular conference meets boys and girls had the opportunity to swim on the same relay teams during the Freezin' Season Invite. Several Hodags teams captured first in the mixed events including: 

• Mixed 8 and under 100 Medley Relay - Ellyse Younker, Michael Schiek, Samson Shinners, Ian Rumney (1:39.09);

• Mixed 10 and under 200 Medley - Charlie Heck, Madelyn Mathwig, Abi Winnicki, James Heck (2:27.74);

• Mixed 12 and under 200 Medley - Lisa Kennedy, Ella Schiek, Jack Antonuk, Jacob Schoppe (2:13.86);

• Mixed 8 and under 100 Free - Samson Shinners, Michael Schiek, Ellyse Younker, Ian Rumney;

• Mixed 10 and under 200 Free - Madelyn Mathwig, James Heck, Charlie Heck, Abi Winnicki (2:11.63);

• Mixed 12 and under 200 Free - Lisa Kennedy, Jack Antonuk, Ella Schiek, Jacob Schoppe (2:03.75) and

• Mixed 14 and under 200 Free - Maddie Quinn, Makenna Winnicki, Joseph Heck, Marissa McGuire (1:54.42).

The club has only two regular conference meets remaining in the regular season. It will be in Lakeland this Saturday.
