Rhinelander man makes court appearance on OWI homicide charge
Charged with homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle and homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle with a prohibited alcohol concentration (both class D felonies), and OWI causing injury, a class H felony, Randall J. Lego stood before Branch I Judge Patrick O'Melia.
Lego is accused of driving while intoxicated and striking a power pole after failing to negotiate a curve on River Road in the town of Pine Lake. His passenger, Jacob R. Juedes, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene.
On Nov. 23, Lego appeared before Branch II Judge Michael Bloom. After reviewing a preliminary police report, Bloom ruled that a crime had "most likely" been committed and gave Lego a $10,000 signature bond.
The case was then transferred to Branch I. Formal charges were not filed at that time as the district attorney's office was still awaiting toxicology reports from the state crime lab.
On Dec. 31, after receiving reports showing that Lego's blood alcohol concentration was .187 two hours after the crash, the district attorney's office filed formal charges.
At Monday afternoon's appearance, O'Melia continued the signature bond and set the matter for a preliminary hearing on Feb. 19.
