The Lakeland Performing Arts Association is bringing the Southeast Alaskan Odyssey, also recognized internationally as the Alaska String Band, to the Lakeland High School auditorium at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

"Hailing from Alaska's capital city of Juneau, the Zahasky family brings the best of American music to their audiences," LPAA said in a press release announcing the performance. "This family-friendly group presents musical favorites that are showcased, touching on genres such as swing, jazz, bluegrass, pop, Celtic and gospel. Their shows move along at a lively pace."

A sample program may include "Daybreak in Dixie," "Glory Bound," "Chattanooga Choo Choo," "Dream A Little Dream of Me," "Mr. Sandman," and "Minor Swing."

This dynamic family band occupies itself by entertaining visitors on board cruise ships in Alaskan waters and at the Chilkat Theatre during the Alaskan summer months, and tours nationally on board a 40-foot bus in the lower 48 states each fall and winter, the release states.

The Zahasky family consists of Paul and Melissa, husband and wife, and their three children, daughters Laura and Abigail and son Quinn.

"As gifted instrumentalists, they often swap instruments during a performance," the release states. "They knit it all together with Zahasky family signature vocal harmonies. The family narration brings to life ancient customs and stories as well as an intimate peek at the lives of contemporary Alaskans - laced with humor, scandal, tragedy and celebration. They also often dress in hand-made native Eskimo costumes."

The concert is sponsored in part by grants from the Wisconsin Arts Board and the Northern Arts Council. The Zahsaky family will be conducting a clinic the afternoon of the concert for area students sponsored by the St. Mathias Thrift Shop.

This dynamic family band, which makes their home on the last frontier, is often the subject of much curiosity and inspiration for those who are fortunate enough to enjoy one of their shows, the release notes.
