On Saturday, March 12, the "Ladies Night Out" bowling league, along with Eagle Lanes, will sponsor the 12th annual "Strike Out Cancer" event in Eagle River. Proceeds will benefit breast cancer research and cancer patient care funds at Marshfield Clinic.

This will be a nine pin, no-tap format, with two shifts of bowlers. Registrations will begin at noon for the 12:30 p.m. bowling shift and 3 p.m. for the 4 p.m. bowling shift.

There will also be a special ceremony at 3:45 p.m. dedicated to Sally Ayers and Bonnie St. Louis. Ayers and St. Louis were members of the "Ladies Night Out" league for many years. Both recently passed away from cancer. All bowlers and community members are invited to attend the dedication ceremony.

The theme again for this year's event is "Everyone Deserves a Lifetime." Last year, the group raised over $11,000 through this event.

Time slots are filling fast and bowlers need to enter to get their desired time to bowl, event organizers said in a press release. The event can accommodate 24 teams or up to 120 bowlers.

"This will be our fifth year directing funds to Marshfield Clinic to benefit women in northern Wisconsin," event organizer Susanne Erickson said. "Marshfield Clinic uses the contribution to support breast cancer patients being treating in northern Wisconsin."

While the dedication of this year's event to Ayers and St. Louis makes 2016 especially meaningful for the organizers, the cause has always been very personal to the "Ladies Night Out" group, the release notes.

"Many of the members of our organizing committee have had personal experiences with cancer," Erickson said. "They are either survivors themselves or had close friends and family members who have fought the disease. We do this event to remember those who have passed away and celebrate with the survivors. My fellow bowlers and I feel a very personal need to do something about helping to eliminate breast cancer in our lifetime. We, and other women, carry the hope that if we ourselves get breast cancer, Marshfield Clinic can help us get through it with the research to find a cure and/or patient care for all women and men in the Northwoods. We feel everyone deserves a lifetime."

"The dedication of the event organizers is amazing," annual giving officer, Marshfield Clinic, Rikki Starich said. "Their passion for helping breast cancer patients and for finding a cure is inspiring. We look forward to celebrating the 12th anniversary of this event and are incredibly thankful for their support. Their fundraising efforts provide additional research, support groups, services and resource materials for patients facing cancer. The impact of these events is immeasurable."
