Winners of conservation poster and speaking contest announced
"It is always a very popular event and some teachers have included participation in the contest part of their yearly, class curriculum," the land water department said in a press release.
This year's theme for the poster contest was "We All Need Trees."
Area students submitted their artwork to Oneida County and posters were judged on Feb. 2. Comments from the judges included: "Judging these posters is hard, but rewarding" and "I loved the simple, spot-on message of these posters!"
The winners of the poster contest are as follows - Elementary Division (grades 2-3): First place: Stella Meza, third grade, Creative Minds, Minocqua; Middle Division (grades 4-6) First place: Mallory Meyers, sixth grade, James Williams Middle School; second place, Anna Wood, sixth grade, Nativity of Our Lord Catholic School; and a tie for third place, Hannah Rumney, sixth grade, and Sierra Woodford, sixth grade, both from James Williams Middle School; Junior Division (grades 7-9): first place, Carleene Morien, eighth grade; second place, Sienna Webber, seventh grade; and third place, Stephen George, seventh grade, all from James Williams Middle School. Eighteen other posters, in both the Middle and Junior Divisions, received an honorable mention ribbon. Copies of the winning posters and all other original posters can be seen on the wall in the hallway just around the corner from the county boardroom on the second floor of the Oneida County Courthouse in Rhinelander. The artwork will be on display until May after which time it will be taken down to make room for the 2016 Northwoods' Invasive Species Poster Contest entries.
The Conservation and Environmental Awareness Speaking Contest, dedicated to Jean Hansen, an Oneida County Conservationist who passed away in January, was held on Feb. 4 at the Oneida County Courthouse.
"A nice crowd gathered to watch and listen to students give their speeches on topics such as Purple Loosetrife, road salt, soil erosion and recycling of roads," the conservation department said in a press release.
The winners and their speech titles in all divisions are as follows: Elementary Division: first place, Ellie Lurvey, "How About Recycling Roads?"; second place, Kara Sowinski, "Soil Erosion" and third place: Chloe Zmek, "Hiking Along the Lake."
In the Senior Division, Grace Hoger placed first with her speech called, "The (Road) Salt Monster."
