There's a new place for crafting enthusiasts to mingle with like-minded people - the Rhinelander District Library.

The library has introduced a new program called Crafternoon and last Wednesday's session involved a lesson in Kumihimo, a Japanese braiding technique.

The crafters used a disk that has eight slots and strung seven strings through it.

"There are eight openings on here and you put your strands together into a loop and then bring those up and then put them into seven of the slots and leave one open. Then you take the open one and you count up three - one, two, three {she counts while pointing at the strings] - and you bring that one [string] down [through the empty slot] and you go back to the one that's open, count one, two, three, and you just keep doing that and you give a little tug to keep the tension on there," explained Terry Rupple, one of the crafters.

This was Rupple's first time participating in Crafternoon but she said she was eager to come back next month.

"I'm enjoying the camaraderie with all the different folks here," she said.

"I would recommend it highly to people who haven't made it yet to give it a try. It's a perfect setting for it and everybody is real helpful. It's a nice way to get to know people."

Another first-time participant, Mary Grafelman, enjoyed learning the new skill.

"I didn't know anything about this kumihimo weaving so I decided I'd come and learn what it was and see how to do it," she said. adding that she'll probably use the finished product as a key chain or use the technique to make a necklace.

She pointed out that thin strings make a thin braid, while thicker strings create a thick braid.

Grafelman said she will attend another Crafternoon session.

"It's a good group of people to get together and there's no stress," she said.

The instructor. Cathy Krupinski, was pleased with the turnout.

"This is our second (Crafternoon session) and we have 13 (people) here today," she said. "We had 12 last month.

Participants don't need to have crafting experience or sign up. The event is free and the materials are provided.

Crafternoon meets every third Wednesday of the month at the library from 2 to 4 p.m. The group will try a new craft each session and the next one may be a card-making session.

"[Their feedback is] really positive," Krupinski said. "The ladies are happy to be here and they chat with each other and they're eager to learn."
