Bowlers honor fallen officer, raise funds for scholarship

The Rhinelander community remembered a fallen officer and raised money to train future officers during the sixth annual Kory Dahlvig Scholarship bowling fundraiser Sunday at Hodag Lanes.

Dahlvig, a Vilas County Sheriff's Deputy and Rhinelander native, was killed in an on-duty traffic accident in April 2010. His parents, Cherri and Ron Dahlvig, created a scholarship fund in their son's name to help students pursuing a degree in the criminal justice-law enforcement program at Nicolet Area Technical College.

This year 11 teams participated in the tournament, a slight drop from the 17 teams who to took to the lanes last year.

"I just think that it's a wonderful thing (to support Kory Dahlvig and the scholarship)," said Aimee Ouimette. "Every day all these people, our police department and county sheriff's (deputies) and everybody, put their life on the line and to keep (the Northwoods) a safe place for us, and for people to come out here and support and to have a scholarship for people in the future (who might) want to go into this line of work, I think that's a wonderful thing."

Ouimette hasn't been able to participate in the event due to back issues, but she attends to support her bowling team which has participated in the fundraiser for the past two or three years.

"It's going really well and it seems like everybody is having a lot of fun," she said. "I hope that every year it gets bigger and bigger."

Jenny Jorgensen, a second-year participant, was ecstatic about the turnout.

"It's good, it's actually really good, I'm really happy that everybody is here," she said.

Throughout the afternoon several lucky bowlers won door prizes, including a signed football, Brewers ticket, a car mat, a coat and other items.

"I think it's great, I really do, we've got lots of donations and stuff to raffle off," Jorgensen said. "I think it's great and everybody's participating."

The Dahlvig family expressed its gratitude for the way the community has made a point of keeping their son's name and legacy alive.

"We're trying to keep Kory's name going because everybody practically knew him and we're just having a good time," said Ron Dahlvig, Kory's father. "The community's support is fantastic, everybody wants to help us."
