"Bailey's hard work and dedication through her years at Rhinelander High School have made her an excellent recipient as a National Merit Finalist," the district said in a press release.
The National Merit® Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program their junior year by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
About 1.5 million students take the PSAT/NMSQT.
Of these juniors, about 16,000 gain scores that qualify them as semifinalists (that's a little more than 1 percent). This group is narrowed down to 15,000, who become finalists.
All finalists compete for a single payment scholarship of $2,500.
The district wishes Nebgen well, the release states.
