George had just returned from active duty where he served as a front line reconnaissance tank machine gunner in World War II. He began his tour of military service in England and from there landed with Allied Forces on Omaha Beach on the third day of the Normandy Invasion. Pushing forward through France, Belgium and Germany, he was awarded three Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. Meanwhile, Betty worked diligently at home in a factory in Chicago to support the war efforts abroad. After their marriage, George worked as a machinist and was then self-employed as a roofing contractor in the Chicago area. In 1973, George, Betty and family moved to Rhinelander where he was a contractor for home construction. George worked for over 50 years until his retirement.
George and Betty have eight children, 19 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. After their retirement, they moved to a quiet setting on a lake near Rhinelander to enjoy fishing, gardening and observing nature.
