The Rhinelander Lions Club will host its milestone 40th annual Winter Festival this weekend on Boom Lake and part of the Wisconsin River Flowage. Hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The fishing headquarters will be located at the shelter by the Boom Lake boat landing in Hodag Park.

The payout for the prizes will be different this year. Each day, five places will be awarded, $500 for the longest Northern, $200 for the second longest, $150 for the third longest, $100 for the fourth longest, and $50 for fifth longest.

Fishing enthusiasts can also win small cash prizes for catching crappies, bluegills, perch and walleyes.

"This is one of the largest payouts in the Northwoods for a fishing tournament," said Mike Romportl of the Rhinelander Lions Club.

Fishing enthusiasts of any age are welcome to participate in the fun, but they must catch their own fish.

Late entry tickets cost $20.

Tickets can be purchased at the Rhinelander Area Chamber of Commerce, Mel's Trading Post, The Fishing Hole on Faust Lake Road, Kemp Street Marathon and BP gas stations, the West Side Shell on River Street, River Street Tap, Hodag Mobil, Hodag Pump and Pantry, and the Holiday Station stores.

Romportl hopes the club will sell 500 fishing tickets.

Those who want to take a break from fishing can participate in the YMCA of the Northwoods' fifth annual 5K Hodag Snow Dash snowshoe event at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

The Open Hodag Dash is part of the Braveheart Series and the top three male and female finishers will win medals.

The registration fee is $20.

Snowshoers can also participate in non-timed 5K family event. The registration for that event is $25.

For more information or to register, call the YMCA of the Northwoods at (715) 362-9622, visit www.ymcaofthenorthwoods.com or www.active.com.

Those who work up an appetite will find burgers, hot beef, brats, chili and a variety of drinks served by the Rhinelander Lions. There will also be raffle prizes.

The festival will also include a free children's event (for youngsters age 11 and under).

The Lions Club has said prize drawings will be held each hour of each day starting at 10 a.m. with last drawing at 3 p.m. for those children that register fish during the preceding hour.

Fish must be caught by the child and taken to the Fish Registration Station at the Boom Lake Boat Landing. Only one fish per hour qualifies for the drawing and fish may be of any species of any legal size.

Children are eligible to win only one hourly prize per day.

Prizes will be awarded each day to the child who catches the longest fish in each of five categories.

At the conclusion of each day, all hourly prize drawing registrants and any child filling out a prize entry ticket on-site for the bike drawings will be entered into the bike drawings. Two bikes will be given away each day around 3:30 p.m.

Winners of the Feb. 13 bike drawings will not qualify to enter the Feb. 14 bike drawings.

Children participating in these drawings need not be present when the drawings take place, however they must make arrangements to pick up their prize from the Lions.

No prizes will be shipped or mailed.

This is the second largest fundraiser for the Lions, with proceeds benefiting a slew of organizations.

Rhinelander Lions Club contributes to or sponsors the following activities: Wisconsin Lions Camp for Blind, Oneida County Eye Care Fund, Leader Dog Program for Blind, Rhinelander High School Scholarship, Babe Ruth Baseball, Rhinelander Soccer Club, Hodag Water Shows, Badger Boys State, Camp Birchrock, Post Prom, Rhinelander Alpine Ski Team, Alzheimer's Association, Prevention of Domestic Abuse, Vision Screening for Children, YMCA, Community Christmas Dinner, Rhinelander Area Food Pantry, Highway 8 Cleanup, Fourth of July Kiddie Parade, Wisconsin Eye Bank of Madison, HeadStart and Northwoods Alliance for Temporary Housing.
