The GFWC-Rhinelander Woman's Club recently completed its December projects with the delivery of more than 25 gifts to a local disabled veteran and family for the Christmas holiday. According to a press release, Oneida County Veterans Service Officer Tammy Walters accepted the gifts on behalf of the family for delivery later in the afternoon.

Walters was the guest speaker at the GFWC meeting in November and the club members were inspired and motivated by her presentation on local veterans and their situations, the release states.

"The very next meeting the club passed around a hat and collected $300 and approved another $300 from the club treasury for adopting a family at Christmas," the release states. "Project leader Sue Bessert worked closely with Walters to procure a wish list from the family and then enlisted members to help shop, wrap and deliver."

Another club project completed last week is the repurposing of old Christmas cards into 400 new and embellished holiday greeting cards which were delivered to seven centers in Rhinelander: Cumberland Heights, Friendly Village Nursing and Rehabilitation, Grace Lodge Assisted Living, Rennes Health and Rehab Center, Milestone Senior Living and both Country Terrace locations. In addition, cards were made and sent to 11 adult family home facilities.

"This project has been led by clubwoman Jo Fabich for the past four years," the release states. "Each year Jo would select a shape for the new cards; one year it was angels, another year it was trees or stars. This year a bell was selected. After Fabich's passing this past spring, the club wanted to continue the project in Jo's name. Clubwoman Mary Meek took on the project and enlisted members to help in various ways - from contacting senior and disabled facilities, to collecting used Christmas cards, cutting out bell shapes and embellishing with glittered polish and handmade bows. A special greeting is printed on each."

Also in December the Club made its community donations of more than $34,000 to these 33 organizations in the areas of arts, conservation, home life, public issues and international outreach: ArtStart, Inc.; Concerts on the Riverwalk; Northwoods Concert Association; Rhinelander Area Community Band; WXPR Public Radio; Downtown Rhinelander, Inc.; Trees for Tomorrow; Food for The Mind; Nicolet College Foundation; Rhinelander District Library; Partners In Education; Alzheimer's Association Greater Wisconsin Chapter; Family Resource Connection; Kids In Need Youth Program; Ministry Home Care Hospice; Ministry Home Care Hospice Quilters; Personal Essentials Pantry; Rhinelander Area Food Pantry; Tri-County Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, Inc.; Rhinelander Ice Association; YMCA of the Northwoods; GFWC 1734 Society; Northwoods Alliance for Temporary Housing; Oneida County Humane Society; Rhinelander Historical Society; Oneida County Department on Aging; A.C.E.S.; Oneida County Sheriff's Department DARE Program; Heifer International; Operation Smile; United Nations Foundation Shot@Life; World Affairs Student Seminar and U.S. Fund for UNICEF.

The General Federation of Women's Clubs is a unifying force, bringing together local women's clubs, with members dedicated to strengthening their communities and enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service, the release states. The local club has been organized since 1898 and federated in 1905.
