Rick Schmitz, Big Tow LLC, lifts the 1-ton tender onto the restored flatbed of the narrow-gauge train at Pioneer Park Historical Complex in Rhinelander last month. The 1925 tender originally held coal to stoke the engine of the 5-Spot steam locomotive when it was in use for the Thunder Lake Lumber Company here. The restoration was made possible by the combined efforts of Rhinelander Railroad Association volunteers, supervised by John Nevins and Augden Windelborn, funding from the Lions Club and other donors, donated cribbing from Lassig Bros. Construction Co., and donated use of the crane. The train has been on display at the complex since 1973 and a great deal of repair work remains to be done, project leaders said in a press release. Donations to support future restoration or for upkeep of the model train layout inside the Soo Line Train Depot Museum can be made through Mayor Richard Johns at City Hall, (715) 365-8600. Volunteers who wish to participate in train or building restoration can contact John Nevins at (715) 367-4061.
