Holiday Senior Citizen Olympics coming to Pines Community Wellness Center
This will be the fourth annual party started by "Total Body Senior" instructors Kevin and Julia Schweer.
"It started with a desire for class members to socialize with members from different classes to share their love of the holidays while enjoying a little friendly competition," Schweer said in a press release announcing this year's event. "It has evolved into a community-wide event that involves an optional charity contribution along with games and the sharing of treats." The school district provides free coffee for anyone attending as well.
This year's event will benefit the "Fill the Backpacks" effort organized by Prince of Peace church. Every weekend, 41 children in the NPSD go home to working families. Many home alone will be responsible to feed themselves while their caregivers are at work. The program aims to fill the backpacks of these children with easy-to-make single-serve food items so they have an easier time feeding themselves while on their own. Volunteers are at the school every week to distribute the donations.
The party will begin at the Pines Wellness Center Group exercise room where participants can drop off their goodies to share for the party, drop off their food donation, and be organized into teams.
Then, everyone will proceed down to the fieldhouse for silly physical activity games, much like the ones elementary school children play. "Trust me, it's a blast!" Schweer said.
Afterwards, the goodies are enjoyed by all.
Attendees need not participate in the games as a cheering section is just as important.
Interested parties can call 715-479-4473 to sign up. Walk-ins are welcome, too.
