Rhinelander vocalist participates in Idyllwild High School Festival Choir
Admission to the Festival Choir is by audition only, based on advanced vocal abilities as demonstrated in a recorded art song judged by the admissions committee as well as a lengthy written application and a resume of past vocal performance experience, according to a press release announcing the honor. Bullard chose "Pur dicesti, o bocca bella" by Antonio Lotti for her audition song.
"The program is an intensive two-week workshop for select high school and college- age singers designed to further develop the vocal and musical skills needed for the performance of choral repertoire, and in the process taking them to a very advanced level," the release states. "Students study and perform a variety of choral/vocal repertoire for both large and small ensembles as led by members of the world renowned resident and guest choral faculty. Students present four concerts, culminating in a performance on Sunday, Aug. 14 of the 'Requiem' by Gabriel Faure at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. Upon arriving, students are tested vocally once again and then placed in sections according to ability. Samantha was chosen for the opera scenes workshop, generally reserved for only college students who attend the camp as counselors and group section leaders. In addition, she was given the opportunity to audition for a solo vocal performance and was selected to sing a solo during the closing concert at Disney Hall. For the past two weeks, Samantha has participated daily for a minimum of six hours in full choir rehearsals, vocal master classes, as well as in special studies and topics taught by faculty."
Asked her reaction upon being chosen to attend the two-week camp, and to achieve such a high level of proficiency as only a sophomore in her first year, Bullard said, "This is probably one of the most mind-blowing things to have ever happened in my life. I always imagined this sort of thing, but gosh, I can't believe it's actually happening."
Bullard has been active in the choir and drama programs at RHS as well as performing in three summer stock seasons at the Northern Stars Playhouse in Hazelhurst. She is a private voice student of Dr. Judith Durocher, Voice Studio D, in Three Lakes.
