Special response teams from Vilas and Oneida County safely subdued an armed man threatening suicide Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Vilas County sheriff's office, SWAT teams responded to an address in Vilas County at approximately 3:43 p.m. Wednesday after Vilas dispatch received a call from an individual reporting that he wanted to harm himself.

"The subject stated that he was armed with a 9mm handgun and two magazines," the sheriff's office said in a press release. "Just prior to deputies' arrival, the subject fled the house and entered the woods. Upon the officers' arrival, gunshots were heard and deputies observed rounds going over their heads. The subject continued to fire his weapon in numerous directions while deputies were on scene. Neighbors in the vicinity were evacuated and SWAT teams from Vilas and Oneida County were deployed. While securing a perimeter, the subject told dispatchers that if he saw law enforcement he would shoot them. Drones from Vilas County and GLIFWIC (Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission) were also deployed to assist in locating the subject. A plane from the Department of Natural Resources was also deployed to the area in an effort to locate the subject. The subject was located by an aerial drone. Vilas County SWAT, along with Oneida County SWAT and Rhinelander Police Department's K-9, converged on the subject and took him into custody without incident."

No one was injured and the subject's handgun was located, the release notes.

Thursday, Vilas County sheriff Joe Fath told the Lakeland Times Mayo was in the hospital on an alcohol committment and would be taken to the county jail upon release.

He is likely to face at least two charges in connection with the incident.

"Probably armed while intoxicated and reckless endangerment," Fath said.

The sheriff's office has dealt with Mayo at least twice in the past year, each time for disorderly conduct, and each time the charge was dismissed, according to court records.
