Vernida Boykin of Rhinelander is hoping participation in a national pageant will help her accomplish her goal of becoming a veternarian.

Boykin, 17, will compete next month for a slot in the national Miss Teen USA pageant and is fundraising to defray the cost of participation.

The Rhinelander High School senior was accepted to the Miss Teen USA state competition set for Sept. 10 and 11 in Fond du Lac. The winner will advance to Nationals.

This is Boykin's first time in Miss Teen USA, but she did some fashion walks for Fashion Bug when she was younger, she said.

She was referred to the pageant, sent in a photo and application and was accepted.

She is in a division that includes Colorado, South Dakota, North Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Wyoming and she will be going up against 40 to 70 other contestants. The state competition is independently produced by Future Productions, LLC.

"There's an interview part where the judges question us on why we're doing it and what we expect to gain out of it and then the rest of it is like a regular pageant minus the talent part," Boykin said.

The different parts of the competition will include swimsuit, evening gown, interview and introduction.

Boykin's mother, Annie Slack, is a big supporter of her daughter's goals.

"I just kind of told her, 'you know, go ahead and give it a shot,' there's a lot of scholarships involved," Slack said. "It's a great opportunity, she's very proud to be representing the town that she's from."

Boykin would use the scholarships to help her achieve her dream of becoming a veterinarian.

She and Slack will host a hot dog/brat sale outside of Trig's Aug. 19 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Aug. 20 they will hold an Indian Taco and bake sale at the Pine Lake Town Hall from 10 a.m. until the goods are gone. For large orders, call or text (715) 360-7147 in advance so they can be ready when the caller arrives.

The funds raised will be used for the registration fee, evening gown, swimwear, hair and makeup.
