Oil painter finds inspiration in courthouse neighborhood
By Kayla Thomason-
Peacock set up his easel, pallet and 11-by-14-inch canvas on South Oneida Avenue after finding inspiration in one of the homes on the street.
What catches his eye is "just anything that's interesting, the shapes, the composition, the way I see the light - usually it's the way the light's coming through," he said.
With this particular place he liked the way the vegetation was growing against the house, he said.
Peacock said he usually knows nothing of the houses he paints, but sometimes the owner will come out and give him some history.
A fair number of his house paintings have come from the area around the courthouse, he added.
"I do quite a lot of plein-air (outdoor painting) work, work directly, work in my studio too," Peacock said. "I love to paint outside, especially this time of year, it's real easy."
Despite the sometimes brutal elements in northern Wisconsin, Peacock also paints outside in the winter. He said he loves the way the light hits the snow and if he thinks he's going to get a painting out of it he'll put up with the cold.
According to his website, davidpeacockart.com, Peacock has taught art at the college level and has exhibited nationally.
