While leaving the world of work in the rear view mirror can be a freeing experience, it's important for many retirees to stay active and engaged in order to fully enjoy the retirement years.

"There's no question having extra leisure time to do what you want is one of the highlights of retirement," Brenda Peltier, Plus50 community sector liaison at Nicolet College, said in a press release.

"But how you spend that leisure time can make all the difference. That's where Nicolet College's Learning in Retirement comes in, offering retirees many opportunities to learn new things, meet new people, and add an extra level of enjoyment to their retirement years."

This coming fall session the LIR will offer a record 50 different presentations and activities from early September through the middle of December.

The natural world and local history will come into sharper focus with presentations on the advance and retreat of glaciers in the region, archeology and Native American burial grounds, soils, fungus, and the popular Ced's Nature Series.

Senior wealth, health, and fitness will be covered in a series of offerings that include financial investments, a look at dementia and another on eyes as they age, and recreational activities that include pickleball and a bike ride on the Bearskin Trail.

For those who enjoy the arts, presentations and activities will include visits to ArtStart events in downtown Rhinelander, the opportunity to join the LIR Chorus, film showings, and a presentation on the Northern National Art Competition at the college.

Numerous other activities will also be available including personalized tours of highlights of local communities and several visits to area supper clubs.

Membership is $40 and is open to anyone who is retired or semi-retired.

Classes will be held throughout the Northwoods in Rhinelander, Eagle River, Minocqua, Lac du Flambeau, Manitowish Waters, Three Lakes, Tomahawk, and Merrill.
