The course's ladies golf league held its annual breast cancer awareness night, which attracted nearly 40 players.
"It was fabulous," organizer Carole Zierden said regarding the event. "First of all, I couldn't have asked for a better day. The weather was unbelievable. It was a great turnout. We had some former golfers that used to play in our league come back and play and we had eight ladies who joined us from the ladies league at Inshalla (Country Club) who came down from Tomahawk. It was just a great night.
"It was nice to have someone (tee off) on every hole. We haven't had that for a while. It was nice that some of the women from Inshalla came over and played with us and joined us."
The event, in its 21st year, started small but has grown little by little each year. Zierden said this year's event brought in roughly $1,400 - $400 of which will go to the Susan G. Komen foundation. The rest will be donated to the James Beck Cancer Center in Rhinelander.
Funds were raised a number of ways, Zierden said, including sponsoring a gambling hole during the course's Wednesday night men's league and through various games and raffles during Tuesday's ladies outing.
To date, the event has raised nearly $9,000.
"I think we've just done a tremendous job with the ladies have raised," Zierden said.
Zierden said the Northwood Ladies League rallies around the event every year and that breast cancer has touched many of their lives - be it their own battles or watching the plight of a friend of family member afflicted with the disease.
"We've had ladies who we've lost in our league who have died either from breast cancer or another form of cancer," she said. "We had one of our ladies who missed last year's league and is back with us now after going through the chemo and going through Jim Beck."
The group had dinner following Tuesday's round and listened to stories from those in the group who are breast cancer survivors.
"They came up, (talked) and it was very heartfelt to hear them talk about," Zierden said. "It was really, really nice. It was very touching and moving for us to hear some of their stories."
In addition to thanking the ladies who participated in the golf outing, Zierden thanked the community members and businesses that supported the event through donations and raffle prizes.
