A night of sweeps at Eagle River Speedway

For the first half of the stock car racing season at Eagle River Speedway it was not in a racer's best interest to win an early heat race. Most of the time the racer who won the heat race did not come back to win the feature.

That trend changed this past Friday night as drivers in three of the track's five classes swept the evening.

Eagle River's Tad Schoonover not only won his heat race but came back to win the WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature. The previous week Schoonover jumped out to an early lead in the second leg of the Eagle River Speedway WISSOTA Midwest Modified Challenge Series only to have car problems and be unable to finish the race.

On Friday, Schoonover jumped out to a commanding lead through the first 15 laps of the 20-lap feature. Then a caution came out and brought the pack to Schoonover's bumper on the restart.

Jerry Grasse of Phelps, who won the previous week's feature, restarted second behind Schoonover. Right on Grasse's tail was Eagle River's Austin Zdroik, followed by two of the top racers from the Upper Peninsula, Marcus Dunbar of Marenisco and the defending class champion, Jesse Aho of Toivola.

While Grasse held to Schoonover's bumper right to the finish, Schoonover held on for a sweep of the WISSOTA Midwest Modified class.

Rhinelander's Dustin Miller swept the Pure Stock class. Miller won the heat by holding off Tomahawk's Keith Troutman, who made his first start of the year at the one-third mile tri-oval.

Miller came back in the feature and defeated the driver that had won the previous two weeks - Eagle River's David Blackberg.

Blackberg tried everything but throwing the kitchen sink at Miller. Every move Blackberg tried, Miller held him off to win the feature.

"Miller and Blackberg both had the same speed in the corners and on the straights, it's just that Miller ran a smart race to hold off Blackberg," commented track promoter Kevin Dawson.

Talented 13-year-old Ty Springer of Eagle River swept the Micro Sprint 600s. Springer's Honda ran away from the competition in the heat and held off Deerbrook's Jake Reif in a good race in the feature to get the sweep in that class.

Conover's Dustin White made it two feature wins in a row in the WISSOTA Street Stocks. White nearly swept the night himself, finishing a close second to Ryan Valeria in the heat. Ryan Glembin finished second in the feature.

The heat races also cost Conover's Dayton Rein a chance for a clean sweep in the Junior Sprints. Rein jumped out to a commanding lead in the heat, only to drop out of the race with mechanical problems. Rein came back to run away from his competition for an easy win in the feature.

This Friday night Eagle River Speedway will host the Milwaukee Bucks Halftime Show, which will include the "Energy" cheerleaders, the "Rimrockers" Acrobat show and "Bango" the team's mascot. The track will also hole its International Roll over Championships (IROC), in addition to the weekly schedule of racing in all five classes.

"Due to the Bucks Halftime Show and the IROC, we've re-scheduled the Junior Fan Autograph night for August 19th," Dawson stated.

Hot laps start at 7 p.m., with racing at 7:30.
