Lakeland Performing Arts Association presents fascinating rhythms of the world with the Alex Meixner Band
The Alex Meixner Band, led by one of the most spectacular accordionists in the world, is equally at home playing polkas for an Oktoberfest, Gypsy jazz, pops, folk, classical, latin or smokin' Zydeco-blues," the LPAA said in a press release. "And they can do them all in one program! In fact, in one song, the band switches among Rock, to Polka to Brahms Lullaby, all in 3 1/2 minutes."
Meixner plays a variety of instruments including three different accordions, trumpet, flugelhorn, trombone, and Alphorn, and is accompanied by a reed/guitar player and a percussionist. Their repertoire also includes vocals.
He began performing at age 6 with the family band. His musical education, besides concentrating on accordion, included time on drums, bass and trumpet, which actually was his college major. This instrumental versatility is combined with a musical background that has included intense studies and performance with some of the leading artists in the world.
Meixner was featured on "The Tonight Show" on NBC and has had a Grammy nomination. He works tirelessly to involve the audience in his performances and is devoted to bringing music to students through educational clinics as well as private teaching, the release states. He will have a clinic for the Lakeland Union High School students made possible through a grant from St. Matthias Thrift Shop.
A sample program may include such songs as "Czardas," "In Den Bergen," "Hoedown/Orange Blossom Special," "Hello Dolly," "Those Were the Days," "Edelweiss" and "Amazing Grace."
The concert is sponsored in part by grants from the Wisconsin Arts Board and the Northern Arts Council.
