Donations needed for benefit for local woman battling persistent cancer
In 2014, Michele Gambetti-Gerdes, a cake designer and shift leader at Dairy Queen, was diagnosed with rectal cancer. She won that battle only to have a malignant brain tumor appear in December 2015.
It was successfully removed but unfortunately this hard-working woman developed a mass on her lung, which is inoperable due to it being too close to her heart.
Now Gambetti-Gerdes is undergoing radiation and chemotherapy.
Despite being ill, Gambetti-Gerdes has tried her best to work while fighting cancer.
"She's very detail-oriented, has an awesome work ethic," said Darla Berg, general manager at DQ and co-organizer of the benefit. "She kept trying to work here one day when she couldn't even stand up and I had to force her to go home."
The organizers of the benefit are trying to juggle full-time jobs and raise funds, and are asking for help raising monetary, service and item donations for the day.
Call Berg at Dairy Queen at (715) 369-3663 for questions about donations and pick up. Donations may also be dropped off at Dairy Queen in Rhinelander.
