After getting a taste of the national stage last year, the Northern Edge figure skating team is gearing up for another run this weekend at the U.S. Figure Skating High School Final.

The event will be held Friday through Sunday in Strongsville, Ohio and members of the Edge - a co-op of figure skaters from Rhinelander High School, Northwoods Community Secondary School in Rhinelander, Three Lakes High School and the Wausau Engineering and Global Leadership Academy - are eager to get on the ice.

"We've got 12 skaters going and they'll participate in 31 individual events and two team events," team spokesperson Tracy Cook explained. "I think we've got some strong skaters. Last year we brought home six silvers and six gold medals and I think we've got a good chance of bringing home at least that many (this year), because we have at least twice as many individual events, and a good chance of bringing home some team trophies."

Alll four skaters who medaled last year return for the Northern Edge this year including senior Grace Hoger and junior Lauryn Cook, the 2014-15 Class A state champions and runners-up in Class A this year.

"We definitely didn't expect to take state last year because we were just kind of threw it at each other," said Lauryn Cook. "It was cool, winning last year. Even getting second this year was pretty cool."

Cook teamed with Hoger last year to win goal in the jumps category the duo finished fifth overall in the team competition. Individually, Cook won gold in juvenile dance and silver in novice choreographed moves. Hoger added gold medals in junior ladies freestyle and junior choreographed moves, and silver medals in novice ladies short program and senior solo.

Hoger, who is no stranger to traveling around the Midwest for competitions, admitted she's nervous heading into this weekend.

"Just going against bigger people," she told the River News recently. "Here in Wisconsin, we don't have a ton of competition. There's like two or three good teams. When we went to Ohio last year, there were like 15 of them. It was kind of nice, but it's (nerve-wracking) to have competition."

Cami Buchmann and Carmen Incha, who each won gold and silver at last year's competition, are back for another shot. Rounding out the team are Rachel Uhlarik, Karli Cecil, Albiona Sabani, Kiana Webie, Lauren Rosendahl, Shandi Peitsch, Caitlin Harris, Michelle Pazdernik and Morgan Webster.

The group has practiced off and on since last month's state final during open skate sessions at the Rhinelander Ice Arena.

"We just kind of prepare and go through our elements like usual and prepare like we usually do," Lauryn Cook said.
