Lakeland Times reporter committed to outdoor sports in northern Wisconsin
By Daleth Mountjoy-
Joki, who still lives in Rhinelander, has been fishing since she was a child and one of her earliest memories is of panfishing with her grandmother and cousin off the dock at her cousin's house.
"He kept catching all the fish," Joki said. "So my grandma told him he'd better start throwing some of the fish over by me so I could catch some. He threw a fish over by me, right to the water of course, and I went to grab it and almost fell off the dock, but I did get the fish!"
Joki has been tournament fishing for the past seven years, and is excited to be working with the Wisconsin River Series this year.
"Its interesting because you get to work a lot with, not only local sponsors but national sponsors," Joki said. "I work with the Minocqua chamber (of commerce) because we'll be holding our championship there in 2017, but I also work with Stevens Point Brewery and places like Minn Kota and Hummingbird that are one of our presenting sponsors."
Joki and her boyfriend also are on the board of "Let's Go Fishing," a non-profit in Rhinelander that uses a 32-foot pontoon boat in Boom Lake to take seniors, veterans and disabled individuals out on short fishing trips or just to enjoy some of the natural beauty that Boom Lake has to offer.
Aside from her love of fishing and the outdoors, Joki also has a passion for fiction writing. For the past five years, she's been one of the municipal liaisons of the northern Wisconsin region for National Novel Writing Month.
"You try to write the first draft of a 50,000 word novel in the month of November," Joki said. "Basically, I'm kind of a cheerleader."
From her history of being a restaurant manager to freelance writing to now informing the Northwoods on important issues regarding the outdoors and working with the Wisconsin River Series, Joki continues her commitment to sharing her love for the outdoors.
