A mother-daughter team has opened the Original Sportsman's Cafe at 230 Thayer St., and are emphasizing family and home-style cooking.

They will be serving typical home-cooked breakfasts, burgers, sandwiches, and open-faced hot beef sandwiches. There will also be daily specials for meatloaf and turkey dinners, a daily sandwich and soup, and chili every day.

Desserts echo favorite recipes of the past like pistachio fluff and homemade cakes.

Other items on the menu that are made from scratch include the soups, chili, cheese sauce, buttermilk biscuits and more.

"(The Sportsman's Cafe on Thayer Street is) where people have went for years (the restaurant recently closed and the previous operators took over the restaurant inside the Days Inn which is now called The Sportsman's Cafe) and I'm hoping that it becomes the spot it used to be," said Tammy Dibbles, co-owner of the Original Sportsman's Cafe. "When I was a kid I used to go there and have the hot beef and go with my grandma."

She said she thinks the open-faced hot beef sandwiches and soups will be a big hit with customers.

Dibbles and her mother, Sue Zwaard, also did some remodeling to the building, giving it a new roof, equipment, ceiling and paint.

The walls now have a dark brown trim, and are tan with a sponged-on design of sage green.

"It looks a lot more open and more light, it's not the dark colors that were in there," Dibbles said.

The decor has a Northwoods theme and some of the familiar mounted animals are still on display.

Dibbles hopes that customers will feel like they are eating at a friend's house and not at a restaurant.

To add to the family-feel, all of the staff at the Original Sportsman's Cafe are related. They are trying to bring their recipes and the traditions they grew up with to the public through the restaurant.

The Original Sportsman's Cafe will be open Tuesdays through Thursdays, and Sundays, from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.

On Fridays and Saturdays they will be open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will reopen from 4 to 8 p.m. for fish fry.

The restaurant is closed on Mondays.

The Original Sportsman's Cafe's number is (715) 369-2101.
