The run/walk, sponsored by the Oneida County Humane Society, began at Minocqua Park Saturday morning. The morning jaunt started at the park pavilion, continued to the end of Pinemere Road, looped around Voss Road and back to the pavilion for a 3.1-mile adventure.
"It's a fun run/walk with all proceeds going to the shelter. What we really need is for people to adopt dogs and cats," explained Maggie Hogan, vice president of Oneida County Humane Society. "Our maximum capacity for dogs is around 20-25 and we've fostered many dogs due to lack of space."
Hogan explained some of the reasons why people surrender their animals.
"A lot of times families realize that their dog or cat doesn't fit their lifestyle," she said, adding that sometimes the elderly surrender their pets due to health or relocation reasons. "Those are the two common reasons people surrender their animals," she said.
"This time of year we get an inflow of animals," director of Oneida County Humane Society Bria Swartout added. "Adoptions are down due to the start of school." It's also kitten season which adds to the current cat count.
"This is a great fundraiser to help support the animals at the shelter," Swartout said. "We have a wish list. We always need cleaning supplies, litter, leashes - anything."
Swartout explained how the facility helps families and pets adjust after an adoption.
"We educate people to the best of our ability. We have a DVD that explains the adjustment involved with a new pet. We are also available after the adoption process, if there are concerns." she said.
Currently the Oneida County Humane society has approximately 25 dogs and 60 cats available for adoption. The shelter is also housing a rabbit, guinea pig and some rats.
The Oneida County Humane Society is located at 1852 N. Stevens St., Rhinelander. For more information, call (715) 362-5992 or email www.ochspets.org.
