Barnett read his book "I Brought a Hodag to School," to the students.
It was a triumphant return for Barnett who was inspired to write the book after drawing a mural of a child-friendly Hodag on a wall at the school. A student named Kayla named the happy hodag Bob.
Barnett wrote and illustrated the book in six months, he said.
"If you guys love the book, I will write more," he told the students at NCES.
Some characters in the book are based on school staff. Principal Wil Losch, for one, makes an appearance.
Barnett explained to the students he drew sketches of the characters to get a feel for who they were in the book.
Barnett did not tell the students where Bob's home is. "It's out there in the Northwoods," he hinted. "But no one really knows where."
Throughout the week, Barnett will work with students at each grade level discussing the process he went through to write and illustrate the book.
Barnett will also show the students how to draw Bob in a "Let's draw Bob" tutorial.
Barnett is a member of the National Cartoonists Society and delivers daily humor through his comic strip. He has also published works for Stackpole books and American Angler magazine, and is the illustrator for the Bible Pathway Adventures app.

Barnett will be signing books for students and families at NCES throughout the week.
