Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council, Inc. (GLITC) has been awarded a grant of $834,543 per year for five years to address substance abuse prevention in partnership with four Tribal Nations of Wisconsin.

The grant was awarded by the U.S. Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

The Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council's "Strategic Prevention Framework Partnerships for Success Program" (SPF-PFS) will focus on three prevention priorities: Underage drinking, young adult binge drinking, and prescription drug misuse and abuse among persons aged 12 - 25 in four tribal communities: Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians, Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians, Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians, and the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin. SPF-PFS project results will be shared with tribal nations in Wisconsin, so others can learn about what works best in preventing substance abuse among tribes.

"Substance abuse has been identified as a serious issue throughout Wisconsin, including for the Tribes," Carol Wright, director of the Positive Alternatives Coalition and other SAMHSA-funded GLITC substance abuse prevention programs, said. "With this Partnerships for Success award, GLITC will work with tribes to enhance the capacity for prevention efforts that began with two previous SAMHSA grants. There is a dearth of data on substance abuse that is specific to Wisconsin Native American Tribes, or Tribes nationally. This grant will help build capacity to collect and use data to drive prevention efforts within the tribes. It will also provide for staff at each Tribe who are, or will be, specifically trained in substance abuse prevention efforts, especially culturally appropriate approaches."

For more information about the Strategic Prevention Framework - Partnerships for Success Program, contact Wright at (715) 588-1067 or [email protected].

Great Lakes Inter-tribal Council, Inc. is a consortium of 12 federally recognized tribes located in Wisconsin and Upper Michigan, with offices on the Lac du Flambeau Chippewa reservation.
