The YMCA of the Northwoods will celebrate Active Aging Week Sept. 21-26 with a variety of programs for those 55 years old and older.

"The Y is committed to providing programs and classes that have the active senior in mind," said Marilyn Duschl, active older adult coordinator. "We have over 600 senior members who participate in group exercise classes, wellness center workouts, aquatic classes and educational and social events."

The Y is extending an invitation to other seniors in the community to receive a free weeklong guest pass to the Y. The week guest pass will give anyone 55 and older the opportunity to workout at the Y, swim and participate in senior exercise classes and programs. Classes include SilverSneakers Classic, SilverSneakers Cardio, Total Body for Seniors, Men's Stretching, Tai Chi for Balance and the Gentle Water Exercise.

During the week the Y will also host special programs and classes. On Tuesday, Sept. 22 Bob Dall, naturalist, will lead a hike on the Almon Trail starting at 1 p.m. A carpool will leave the Y at 12:30 p.m. A demonstration of the Tai Chi for Balance program will be presented at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23. This class is designed to improve balance, coordination and strength. Also on Wednesday there will be free senior fitness assessment from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Six assessments of strength, endurance, flexibility and agility will give seniors an idea of their fitness, the Y said in a press release. Are you curious about pickleball? On Thursday, Sept. 24 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. seniors can learn the basic skills of the game.

The Y is a recognized Healthways SilverSneakersĀ® Fitness Program location. Healthways offers a number of older-adult programs.

SilverSneakers is the nation's leading exercise program designed exclusively for Medicare-eligible adults and for group retirees, the release states.

Those who are

eligible for the SilverSneaker program through their health insurance are encouraged to enroll now.

To participate in the group land and water exercise classes, special programs and Wellness Center workouts during Active Aging Week, pick up a free guest pass at the YMCA located at 2203 East Winnebago Street, Rhinelander. Additional information and a schedule of classes will be available. For more information, call the Y at (715) 362-9622.
