Monday night marked the end of the season for the hometown Lake Tomahawk Snowhawks in the summer snowshoe baseball season.

Games hosted every Monday night throughout the summer, at Snowshoe Park in Lake Tomahawk, have provided residents and visitors to the area with plenty of excitement.

Each Monday large crowds filled the ball park to its capacity while the Snowhawks hosted a wide variety of opponents. Everyone from the Chicago All-Stars to local celebrities and hometown heroes showed up to play.

For the final game of the season the Snowhawks went to bat against Wisconsin Public Service, a team Jeff Smith, the Snowhawks playing manager, said he was excited to play.

No one could have guessed they would have given the Snowhawks a run for their money and it certainly didn't look that way after four innings of play, when the Snowhawks were up 8-0.

The fifth inning was when WPS began to find its groove and started putting runs on the board.

The team took one run back from the Snowhawks in the fifth to rid themselves of the zero that had been a fixture on the scoreboard for a large portion of the game.

By the sixth inning WPS had put four runs on the board. The team added six more in the final two innings but fell short of victory.

During the seventh inning, the Snowhawks announcer had a packed house on their feet singing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" for the final time this year.

After nine innings of play the deficit was just too large for WPS to come back from and the Snowhawks ended the season with a well-deserved 17-11 victory.

Smith said the game was a great way to end the season and credited the other team with putting up a good fight to make things interesting.

"It was a great end to the season," he said. "The field was awesome. The weather was awesome. This team came here to play and it was a great game."

Looking back on the day it wasn't all highlights for the Snowhawks. A few players came away from the final game with injuries, but Smith said at least those injuries came at the end of the season when the players will have plenty of time to heal.

"Our guys batted pretty good. I mean considering we have some injuries on our team (after tonight)," he said. "We've got some hamstrings and fingers. It's the end of the year."

All in all, Smith said he was happy with the way the Snowhawks played over the course of the season.

"I thought it was a great year. We had really good crowds and our team hung together pretty good when they really needed it and despite the rainy Mondays, our team did well."

Looking ahead the Snowhawks are tossing around the idea of a winter game at Snowshoe Park sometime in January, and for next year Smith said the team with be back with a couple young additions to the lineup.
